Elland Library refurbishment and fit out

Overview

This scheme involved the complete strip out and refurbishment of the entire library building which was initially constructed in the early 1900’s with several extensions and amendments added in the last 100 years. While not a listed building, it is well know and very popular in the area and has several remarkable features including a large sprung dance hall floor. The Library is directly bordered on all sides by public footpaths or residential gardens and is sited on the main highway through the centre of Elland. Challenges Although the building is not listed it has significant historic value. Therefore, all works were undertaken to the highest standards using quality materials.

Construction details

• Full scaffold
• Complete removal of slates, battens, felt and lead, re-roof of 10 pitched and 2 flat roofs including using reclaimed slates from site and hand picking additional replacements
• Bespoke lead valleys. gutter linings, outlets and troughs manufactured on site by tradesmen
• Full stonework re-pointing using St Astier NHL
• Removal and replacement of all windows and doors
• Identifying, splicing and/or replacing joists and roofing timbers
• Full internal strip out and fitout to remodel the building for suitable use as office and library
• Working with council principle building surveyor and conservation officer throughout the process
• Construction of external staircase and landscaping to enhance access and improve the local greenspace.

Challenges

Although the building is not listed it has significant historic value so all works were undertaken to the highest standards using quality materials. The busy location was also a challenging factor for access to our works. Boarding was on all four sides of a pedestrian footpath.

Heath & Safety

The project was completed without RIDOR and no accidents were recorded throughout the entire works.
